The Down Low: By definition, a platform refers to “the declared policy of a political party or group.” It’s also defined as, “a raised, level surface on which people or things can stand.” Platform Beer Company, headquartered in Cleveland and with an additional location in Columbus, is doing a pretty impressive job of combining those two concepts. Between their ever-changing tap list and constantly-rotating lineup of canned beers of every style, Platform serves the masses well, despite only being around since 2014. That’s no small task, given the large number of breweries found in Cleveland, such as Great Lakes and Thirsty Dog, that have been established in the game for much longer.
The taproom is located on Lorain Road, one of the most diverse stretches of real estate in terms of food and drink options found anywhere. On a recent visit, it was pleasing to see that the brewery offered many options not found among their wide selection in stores, always a plus for patrons who want to feel like the brewery visit is something worth seeking out. The long stretch of bar in the tasting room is found after passing several of the smaller tables by the entrance, and is aptly located near the large fermenting tanks. There’s a dog-friendly patio adjacent to the bar, and 6 packs and growlers can be purchased on site as well. The friendly bartender at the time of my visit was knowledgeable and offered good recommendations, both of which led me to sample beyond the second flight in order to get the full experience while my wife took the kids to the nearby West Side Market.
A particular highlight for this brewery as of late has been their Kettle Sour series, a conglomeration of tart and sweet, mouth-watering and quenching, and downright crushable, lower ABV sours that constantly keep you watching social media for the next release. They all offer something different in terms of fruits, and if you’re a sour beer-lover like we are, this is a great series to pursue. Additionally, the small batch IPA series experiments with lots of different hop and malt varieties, most of which are combinations that are unfamiliar to the common craft beer drinker, and yet each stands alone as something new and unique.
With so many new microbreweries opening in the last few years, it’s always encouraging to see a few serve as beacons to the rest, focusing on quality over quantity and on leading the way when it comes to innovative and flavorful new offerings. When your logo is a lightbulb, it sets a high standard for others to follow while simultaneously standing above those around you. No name would be more fitting in this case than Platform…
